KC Royals: Another Wil Myers & James Shields Trade Evaluation

facebooktwitterreddit

I know by now, a midst the most exciting September for KC Royals baseball we have seen in 29 years, the last thing you are probably thinking about is the trade that brought us James Shields and Wade Davis. However, I thought after last night’s game, now would be an appropriate time to bring it up again.

More from Kansas City Royals

Games like last night’s 1-0 win against the Yankees in New York are games that playoff hopeful, division leading, Cinderella story  teams like the KC Royals need to win. And they did.

James Shields shoved the ball down Yankee batters’ throats for 8.1 scoreless innings- only allowing 3 scattered hits. Then Wade Davis came in for the ninth inning and got his first career save and his 30th straight scoreless appearance out of the bullpen.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Royals would not be in this position without James Shields and his 200.1 innings of work and Wade Davis’ stellar 0.72 Earned Run Average.

Now I ask you this: with disregard to the future, was the trade made in order to obtain these two pitchers worth it for this run that the Royals are currently making?

My answer is yes. And you won’t find a guy who was more initially against this trade for the past year and a half.

But then it hit me. This is the reason Dayton Moore made this trade; to be a contender right now. Was it selfishly a desperate attempt to try to save his job as well? I’m sure it was.

But I don’t care about that now because I’m having more fun watching the Royals right now than I have my whole life that has spanned over the last three decades. There is no doubt in my mind that the Royals would not be in this position without James Shields and his 200.1 innings of work and Wade Davis’ stellar 0.72 Earned Run Average.

James Shields has provided the team with experience and has been the leader that our young staff needs during this big season for the Royals. Wade Davis? Well, Wade Davis has given up 5 runs all season. I think that speaks for itself.

Sure, it is easy to say that the Rays won that trade. Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi could very well be superstars within the next five years. I wish the best for them. All that I am saying is that the trade made in order to give the Royals a chance right now is doing exactly that. And the joy (emotional roller coaster) that it has given this city is worth the price of the trade.

There is not two pitchers in the MLB right now (with the exception of Clayton Kershaw) that I would trust more than James Shields and Wade Davis to pitch in a big game in October for the Royals. And that is exactly what we are on pace to see. So get excited, Kansas City, and put the trade behind us for good.
