KC Chiefs Training Camp Report: A.J. Jenkins, Travis Kelce, Justin Houston

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs opened up their first full day of real practice yesterday afternoon and there was tons to report. First, Justin Houston was in camp and looked to be in great shape.

Houston also spoke with the media following day one. Many questions were asked concerning the contract, including something along the lines of, will the thoughts of getting a new deal done be a distraction to your play on the field?

"“That’s in Gods hands. I’m here to play football.” Said Houston when asked about when his deal will get done. “I’m not worried about that, I’m here to help the team and do what the coaches ask for.”“If you’re worrying about that contract, it will slow you down from the things you’ve got to do on the field and I don’t want that to happen,” Houston said “My main focus is football”"

Personally, I’m confident that the Chiefs will get a deal done with their best defensive player. The young man is just now entering the prime of his career and could eventually be a defensive player of the year type of player, if he isn’t already. Justin Houston will have a contract soon.

Moving on to today (Friday, July 25th), wide receiver, A.J. Jenkins has been making some noise with nice catches.

Jenkins will play an intricate part into the Chiefs offense in 2014. After joining the team late in last years pre-season, he never got fully acclimated to Andy Reid‘s offense and struggled to get on the field.

The former first round pick will now have a full off season under his belt and will find his way on the field. Hearing that he’s making plays consistently should be music to our ears.

Another interesting story is concerning middle linebacker, Nico Johnson. After somewhat of a disappointing rookie season, Johnson still can’t find his way on the field, even on special teams.

With the signing of Joe Mays via free agency, Nico Johnson could find himself on the outside looking in. Hearing that he’s not even getting special teams reps with the first team isn’t good news for the second year linebacker. His story with the Chiefs has been a mystery from the beginning and his situation will be one to monitor this training camp.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Lastly, news broke yesterday about tight end, Sean McGrath contemplating retirement. According to Coach Reid, McGrath is dealing with “personal issues” and there will be more to report on that later.

McGrath filled in nicely last season, having to start in 10 games while also filling the role as the teams backup long snapper. Earlier in the week, it was reported that Travis Kelce had been filling that long snapper role in the absence of McGrath but today, let’s just say it didn’t go so well…

At least the kid can catch! He’ll have plenty of time to work on the snaps and again, it’s just for the backup role. Thomas Gafford is the starter at that position and has done a damn fine job since he joined the team.

The Chiefs are hosting their annual Family Fun Day tomorrow, July 26th up in St. Joe Missouri. If you haven’t been, It’s an awesome event and I highly recommend it to Chiefs fans all across the kingdom.
