2 Teams Listed as Potential Threats to Sign Kareem Hunt Away From Chiefs
By Joe Summers
The Kansas City Chiefs are just one win away from a third straight Super Bowl, sitting on the doorstep of history with only the Philadelphia Eagles in the way.
Running back Kareem Hunt's return to the Chiefs has been a joy for fans, as he led the team in yards from scrimmage and has seemingly wrestled control of the backfield away from Isiah Pacheco. Hunt is expected to handle the majority of the carries in the Super Bowl as well, and many are now wondering if the organization will sign Hunt to a contract extension.
He's a pending free agent but after his success, other teams may come calling. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report put out a list of ideal fits in free agency, identifying a pair of teams who could poach Hunt in the coming months.
Saints and Titans Named Possible Landing Spots for Kareem Hunt
It's important to note that Knox declared the Chiefs are still the best for Hunt, who rushed for 728 yards and seven TDs with the team while adding 176 yards through the air. Should the Chiefs elect not to re-sign him, the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans were listed as teams to watch.
"The New Orleans Saints should consider prying Hunt away from Kansas City. The Saints could use a physical running complement to Alvin Kamara and need to find one on a budget," Knox wrote. "The Titans could also be interested, especially with former Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi now doing the team building in Tennessee."
Each team is in a rebuilding phase with talented incumbent backs in Kamara and Tony Pollard, yet Hunt would be a perfect complement to either one and a stabilizing force on the offense. Even still, it'd be hard for Hunt to leave Kansas City after waiting so long to come back.
"A return to Kansas City would make the most sense," Knox continues. "The Chiefs' offense clearly fits Hunt's skill set, and there isn't a more stable organization in the NFL."
Knox expects Hunt to command a salary in the neighborhood of $3 million, which Kansas City could certainly afford if they want to. Based on how important he's been to the Chiefs offense this season, retaining Hunt should be a top priority for general manager Brett Veach.
In the meantime, the Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. If Hunt keeps up his great play, he could soon finally win his first ring.
