While the Kansas City Chiefs are busy worried about putting the finishing touches on the roster ahead of training camp, the front office has been considering all options to ensure every part of the team is prepared for another Super Bowl run.
That's meant general manager Brett Veach has made numerous signings and additions, not only in the draft but through free agency as well. Veteran tight end Robert Tonyan was one of those acquisitions, signing a one-year deal worth just under $1.3 million in March with Kansas City after a brief stint on the practice squad in December.
Unfortunately for Tonyan, his time could be short-lived. The Chiefs are fairly loaded at tight end, and Tonyan could wind up being a roster casualty by training camp next month.

Chiefs TE Robert Tonyan Might Get Cut by Training Camp
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Indiana State, the 31-year-old tight end spent the first five years of his career with the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed a stellar 2020 campaign, catching passes from Aaron Rodgers, hauling in 52 balls for 586 yards and a whopping 11 TDs.
He's never reached those heights again, spending one season each with the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings after leaving Green Bay. Tonyan is athletic and talented, though Kansas City doesn't exactly need him right now.
Travis Kelce is obviously still around, albeit nearing the end of his career, while Noah Gray is under a multi-year contract, and the team just drafted fourth-rounder Jared Wiley out of TCU a year ago. He's recovering from an ACL tear, though Wiley still figures to be part of the team's long-term plans at the position. Throw in guys like Geor'Quarius Spivey as well, and you've got stiff competition at the position.
For someone like Tonyan, who lacks the upside of Wiley or the familiarity with the system of Gray, it's hard to see how he breaks camp. Unless Andy Reid chooses to keep four tight ends, which is possible albeit unlikely, Tonyan has no real path to playing.
Whether the organization keeps him around through training camp remains to be seen, but it's overwhelmingly probable that Tonyan will be cut sooner rather than later.
