Even though the Kansas City Chiefs were never really in play for Tony Romo, the veteran quarterback will still have a major effect on the team.

Early on this offseason, many Kansas City Chiefs fans were calling for the team to add veteran quarterback Tony Romo. These calls were backed up by a number of NFL pundits who championed the cause. Fortunately, the Chiefs never showed any actual interest in adding the 37 year old coming off a broken back. However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t play a role in what the Chiefs do this offseason.

As it sits, Tony Romo is currently a Dallas Cowboy. Despite all the early prognostication and group think, the Cowboys came to a brilliant realization…they didn’t have to do anything when it came to Romo. So Dallas has held on to the veteran signal caller until someone offers them what they want.

That “someone” is the Houston Texans who remain the sole suitor in any potential trade. However, if no trade happens, then the Texans will almost certainly draft a quarterback this year (supposing one is available). That adds another competitor for the Chiefs in their search for a quarterback.

There have been claims from the Texans that they are happy with Tom Savage as the starter…but we all know better. If the Texans are left without a clear starter, then they will certainly look to draft one.

It Gets More Complicated

There’s another angle to this as well. If the Texans are likely taking a quarterback at #25, and the Chiefs are in play at #27, any team looking to trade up will undoubtedly try to get ahead of both teams. That adds a number of other teams into the mix.

That number could be increased by another effect of Tony Romo’s ultimate destination. The Broncos are also apparently not out of the market yet either. If that is the case, then if Denver is unable to get Romo they will likely turn to another veteran. That, in turn, could effect what a team like the Browns decide to do in the draft.

That’s the problem with the quarterback market. There simply isn’t enough talent to meet all of the demand at the position. That means every move can alter the market significantly. Tony Romo shouldn’t be having this kind of an effect, but he does. What’s even more frustrating is that if Romo retires, that could leave a huge wake that keeps the Chiefs from being able to get their man.

Remember, it happened last year when the Broncos traded up to get Paxton Lynch.

The Kansas City Chiefs are undoubtedly in the market for a quarterback. The questions are “Who?” and “When?” Unfortunately, that is not entirely in their control. As other teams make decisions, the Chiefs will likely have to change theirs. It’s not what the fans and pundits want to hear, but it is how things go. Hopefully KC will find themselves in a position to get the guy they believe can lead this team in the future.
