Kansas City Chiefs Stunned, Lose To The Raiders, 24-20

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their worst loss of the season, falling to the now 1-10 Oakland Raiders. Kansas City had a lot riding on this game as they were in a first place tie with the Denver Broncos in the AFC West.

Oakland came out with a lot of energy and emotion in this game, stifling the Chiefs offense in the first half. They also took advantage of the Chiefs poor rushing defense, gashing them for two first half touchdowns.

Raiders running back Latavius Murray gashed the Chiefs for both of those first half touchdowns, one being a 90 yard free run to put the Raiders up early with a 14-0. The Chiefs then answered with a field goal, after Oakland muffed a punt and put Kansas City in great position.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs looked absolutely terrible in the first half. Between the weather and horrible play calling, Kansas City went 0-for-9 on third down in the first half and just 2-for-14 on the night.

Andy Reid had his team playing overly conservative, not taking any shots deep on a Raiders defense that was selling out on the run.

In the second half, Reid opened things up more. Travis Kelce and Dwayne Bowe came up with some big catches, setting up two touchdowns for Alex Smith. The 30 yard touchdown reception for Charles was just awesome, giving him his 11th on the year.

However, tonight was Oakland’s night, as rookie quarterback Derrick Carr came up with a 17-play, 7:21 drive that ended with a game winning touchdown to James Jones. The Raiders gained 6 first downs, mostly because of Marcel Reece‘s late game impact.

The play that will haunt this game for the Chiefs for a long time was the controversial pass interference call on Ron Parker. Both players made significant contact while the ball sailed out of bounds in what should have been ruled un-catchable. Anyway, Parker picked up the penalty and eventually the game winning touchdown.

Kansas City was unable to protect Alex Smith on their final drive of the game, giving up a sack that ultimately ended the game. The Chiefs now have to face back-to-back quality opponents in Denver and Arizona.

The Chiefs will now be glued to their tv’s, hoping and praying that Miami can pull off a big win in Denver, and the Rams knock off the Chargers. Kansas City now falls to 1-2 in the division, while Denver is 3-0. In other words, a tie cannot win the Chiefs the AFC West.

They have to hope that Denver falls one or two more times down the stretch but don’t hold your breath on that one.

Kansas City is still in position to make the playoffs so there is no reason to kiss this season goodbye. If Miami and St. Louis can win, this horrible feeling will be gone. For now, it’s horribly embarrassing.

Chiefs Stats:

Alex Smith – 20/36, 234 yards, 2 TD’s

Jamaal Charles – 19 carries, 80 yards, 4 receptions, 42 yds, 1 TD

Travis Kelce – 4 receptions, 67 yards

Dwayne Bowe – 3 receptions, 42 yards

Justin Houston – 4 tackles, 1 sack, (now has NFL best, 13 sacks)
