KC Chiefs Trade Rumors: Possible Moves for Playoff Push

facebooktwitterreddit

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today released an article recently on possible trades he would like to see happen in the NFL. Two of his five trade scenarios involved the KC Chiefs, who are coming off a blowout win against the St. Louis Rams.

The first trade Middlehurst-Schwartz threw out was the Atlanta Falcons trading wide receiver Roddy White to Kansas City. Here’s what he had to say on his reasoning,

"“Kansas City has lacked a true complement to Dwayne Bowe, who is providing diminishing returns as No. 1 receiver. White also could thrive in the short-to-intermediate game that Alex Smith relishes. The Chiefs could stand to part with a pick in order to fill such a longstanding need.”"

How bad does Kansas City need a receiver? Alex Smith has yet to throw a touchdown pass to a receiver this year (he’s had nine total TDs). Yeah, it’s that bad. The Chiefs desperately need another guy alongside Dwayne Bowe to throw the ball to. With this trade, not only would Smith have a big target down the field, but White is an experienced veteran and could hopefully learn the offense quickly.

With D-Bowe and White out on the field, Smith would have two good receivers and would also have tight ends Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano to throw to. Oh, not to mention new guy De’Anthony Thomas. It’d be a whole new offense for the KC Chiefs.

At the same time though, Roddy White is known for dropping passes. The KC Chiefs already have that in Dwayne Bowe so would this be worth it in the end? White is also 33 years old, which could be a big factor in not going after him as well.

Middlehurst-Schwartz’s other trade situation involved the Kansas City Chiefs trading one of their own guys in Tamba Hali. He thinks the Chiefs should trade Hali to the Arizona Cardinals. Here’s what the article said on the scenario.

"“With four sacks and three forced fumbles this season, Hali continues to be a disruptive force for the Chiefs. But Hali is in the second-to-last year of a monster contract, and Kansas City needs to look to its pass rush’s future.Above all, the Chiefs must lock down Justin Houston to a long-term contract. The team gambled by letting Houston enter the final year of his rookie deal this season, and the 25-year-old has only driven up his worth with 10 sacks in eight games. Kansas City already drafted Hali’s successor in rookie Dee Ford, and dodging Hali’s cap hit next year would be a shrewd move.”"

This probably won’t happen. The Chiefs will hold onto Tamba Hali until the end of the year and why shouldn’t they? He’s had a monster year.

Yes, Dee Ford will likely be taking the reins after this season, but Hali is a fan favorite here in Kansas City and will be playing the rest of 2014 in a KC Chiefs uniform. Plus, I highly doubt the Cardinals would want to take Hali’s cap number at this point in the season.

The other trade rumors Middlehurst-Schwartz listed were Marshawn Lynch to the Chargers (hope this one doesn’t happen), Vincent Jackson to the Seahawks, and Andre Johnson to the Patriots. Jackson has been linked with the Chiefs a few times and Josh Michaels discussed it recently as well. Don’t hold your breath on that happening though Chiefs fans.
