Kansas City Chiefs Trade Rumors: Vincent Jackson

facebooktwitterreddit

As the trade deadline approaches across the NFL, rumors begin to circulate and the Kansas City Chiefs, for whatever reason, have been linked to wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Most of the rumors are spawning from this NFL.com article and the rumor has hardly any substance.

Still, there are a few good points to be made in the Jackson trade to the Chiefs. The Buccs are willing to go separate ways with him and just for arguments sake let’s say the Chiefs pony up a third rounder and a conditional pick later, depending on how it plays out.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Personally, I would take that deal, for both sides. Starting with Tampa, their season is a lost cause and collecting as many draft picks for the next few seasons is exactly what they need to do. Lovie Smith is an excellent coach, but he didn’t inherit much to build around down there. Sure, they have some talent but stacking picks and building the team the way he wants to should be the goal.

For the Chiefs, they need another receiver that can get open for Alex Smith, who is quietly putting together a very underrated season. The future for Dwayne Bowe in Kansas City is uncertain, as he hasn’t lived up to his new contract in any way shape or form. Adding a big play threat like Jackson could be exactly what the Chiefs offense needs to become one of the best in the NFL and help them make their playoff push these final ten weeks.

They already have the tight ends and running backs, but adding Jackson to become the number one threat could really open things up for Alex Smith. The part where it gets really tricky is the cap space.

Per over the cap, the Chiefs have just around $4 million in space this season, which Jackson would take up as soon as he became a part of the 53 man roster. He doesn’t get any cheaper after this season either, but that doesn’t mean the Chiefs don’t have options.

They could cut Dwayne Bowe by April, freeing up almost $10 million in cap space right there and if the trade does happen, and Jackson proves worthy, that could be a very viable option as his deal is worth right around $10 million per year. With that, Eric Berry is going to need an extension which will also free up a few more million in cap space.

At the end of the day, the likelihood of this deal going down is not very high. Jackson isn’t necessarily on the block, openly anyway, and John Dorsey is likely to just build his talent from within.

Still, it’s a juicy rumor that we all love to explore and unfortunately, it looks to be just that.

What do you guys think? Should the Chiefs really try to pursue this and do you think it would be a good deal? Sound off below!
