The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to return to the top of the mountain next season. But they'll have a hard time getting there if they can’t stay healthy.

The Chiefs did well enough to get back to the Super Bowl and post a 15-2 record despite a string of injuries to key playmakers Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice last season but the issues came to a head when they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles last February.

With that loss further in the rear view mirror, the Chiefs have been able to stay on the field for the most part during training camp. But that concern reared its ugly head again when three players were sidelined for Wednesday’s practice.

Chiefs Already Dealing With Wide Receiver Injuries During Training Camp

Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest reported that wide receivers Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Skyy Moore and Xavier Worthy are not practicing on Wednesday. Brown is dealing with an ankle injury while Moore has a hamstring ailment and Worthy is dealing with a head injury.

Chiefs reporter Matt McMullen added Wednesday was a lighter day of practice, and with an off day on Thursday, it's easy to see that Kansas City may just be buying time for these guys to get healthy again.

This is not the way that the Chiefs wanted to start training camp. Brown was signed before the 2024 season to be a deep threat for the Kansas City offense that has seemingly been missing since Tyreek Hill was traded. But a shoulder injury sidelined him until December, leaving the Chiefs scrambling for help.

Moore also spent the majority of the 2024 season on injured reserve with a core muscle injury and it allowed Worthy to step up for a strong rookie season.

Worthy may be the biggest concern out of the group as he’s looking to build off a rookie campaign where he caught 59 passes for 638 yards and six touchdowns. But the absence of all three receivers underlines a key issue as Patrick Mahomes has strived for continuity this offseason.

“Whenever you have a guy that you spent that time with and had that connection with, you can hit the ground running because you know those different things,” Mahomes said during June’s mandatory minicamp.

There’s a good chance that the Chiefs are playing it safe with their receivers considering their opener with the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil is still over a month away. But with Rice facing a suspension stemming from his involvement in a high-speed car crash last year, the Chiefs would probably like to get their weapons as many reps as possible to fix an offense that had its lowest passing yard total since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2018.

It’s not as bad as it could be in this stage of training camp. But it also is a situation worth monitoring as the Chiefs prepare for upcoming season.
