The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of questions to address when free agency begins this week. But one of the most immediate is whether Travis Kelce will return for the 2026 season.

A lock for the Hall of Fame, Kelce is synonymous with the Chiefs, holding franchise records for receptions (1,080), receiving yards (13,002), and receiving touchdowns (82) after 13 seasons in Kansas City. This makes me feel like it’s a lock that if Kelce plays in 2026, it will be with the Chiefs. But The Athletic’s Dianna Russini made it sound like it’s not that simple with her latest reporting on Sunday.

According to Russini’s post on X, “Kelce appears to return to play a 14th season” and “The Chiefs remain very much in the mix” to re-sign him. But she adds that intel is “Based on conversations with several teams,” suggesting Kelce could be considering playing elsewhere if he holds off retirement for another year.

Latest Travis Kelce Report Raises Questions Over Chiefs’ Future

The first instinct with this news is to wonder if Kelce is playing his leverage as a free agent. Since he’s not exclusive to the Chiefs, Kelce can visit other teams, see what they would offer, and give Kansas City the first chance to match any contract extended his way. In a sense, the Chiefs and Kelce are allowing the market to set itself, which can work for or against Kansas City.

A similar scenario played out with Matthew Stafford, who was not a free agent but was given permission to talk to other teams as he sought a raise last offseason. After reportedly talking with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants, Stafford ultimately signed with the Rams and went on to win MVP honors last season.

But Rusinni’s post also raises questions about how Kelce views the situation. The Chiefs just finished a season where they appeared to be closer to the end of an era than the middle of it, and Kelce’s time is limited. While Kelce may want to return, the Chiefs may want to get younger and more explosive on offense, which could lead them to sign a free agent such as Isaiah Likely or a rookie, such as Oregon’s Kenyon Saddiq, as Kelce’s replacement.

With Patrick Mahomes recovering from a torn ACL, Kelce could also view the Chiefs’ chances of winning a Super Bowl in 2026 as much lower than they had been in previous years. With this not being the first offseason in which the retirement question has been raised, the uncertainty surrounding Mahomes' health for the 2026 campaign could lead Kelce to a team he feels has a better shot at winning it all this season, writing an unforeseen ending to his time in Kansas City.

It’s a new wrinkle to Kelce’s retirement drama, as he appears willing to play next season. But it also could be the prelude of a strange sight, seeing Kelce put on a different uniform to end his career.
