After Week 1 of any NFL season, it's easy to overreact to everything that happened. In the case of the Kansas City Chiefs, trying to hold ourselves steady after a 31-10 drubbing of the Denver Broncos wasn't so easy. There were a lot of things to be elated about following that performance.
And the hope is that much of what KC did in that game carries over to Week 2 versus the Indianapolis Colts later tonight. While the Broncos steadied the waters and beat Jacksonville to hold strong at 1-1, the Los Angeles Chargers' season just took a turn for the worse. And by worse, I mean the pits of despair.
Jim Harbaugh, Justin Herbert, and capri-wearing Mike McDaniel's were already in the hole after last week's beatdown at the hands of the lowly Arizona Cardinals. Today was an opportunity at home against an AFC West opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, to creep their way back into the conversation.
But it only got worse for Herbert and his offense.
Kansas City Chiefs fans are basking in the glory of the Chargers' brutal 0-2 start.
LA managed just 14 points, identical to their tally last week, but the operation looked ten times worse. Herbert himself completed just 15-of-27 passes for sub-200 yards, one score, and two interceptions. The first pick was a ball that tight end David Njoku inexplicably bobbled and popped it up, falling right into the waiting hands of Raiders cornerback Hezekiah Masses. But the second was all Herbert, who lofted a meatball to Masses late in the game for his second pick, sealing his team's fate.

And while running back Omarion Hampton had a bounce-back performance with over 100 yards from scrimmage and a score, he lost a key fumble late in the game when the Chargers were driving. LA took eight penalties, half of them on their Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Alt. The Chargers were also incredibly lucky to only lose one fumble, as throughout the game they put the ball on the ground an astoundingly bad six times.
Normally, I would try to temper my excitement for how poorly this season has begun for the Chargers, who always seem to be crowned the next Super Bowl contender by football media every offseason. And then they go and, well, 'Charger it." Unsurprisingly to most Chiefs fans, it's happened again.
And while there are 15 more games for them to play and work their way back, a 0-2 start never bodes well historically for a team's playoff chances. Just ask the 2025 Kansas City Chiefs. And looking at the Chargers' upcoming schedule, I think it's safe to say it could be a while before they reach even one or two wins this year.
Harbaugh and his squad have matchups with the following opponents from weeks three to 10, including a Week 7 bye: Bills, Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, Ravens. I won't say their season is over, but it's holding on for dear life, and right now there aren't more than a couple of teams that I would say have a worse shot at making the playoffs as things stand right now.
And being a Chiefs fan, that brings a smile to my face.
