Steve Spagnuolo Reveals Stunning Debate Chiefs Coaches Had During Broncos Game
Last Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs barely escaped their matchup with the Denver Broncos, securing a 16-14 victory. The win took some last-second heroics by Leo Chenal, who blocked the field goal to secure the game for the Chiefs.
The ending will go down in NFL history as one of the best finishes to a game ever. However, that scenario almost had the chance of never existing.
According to Charles Goldman, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo told the media during his Thursday press conference, that he discussed with Andy Reid letting the Broncos score on the final drive.
Chiefs Debated Letting Broncos Score on Game-Winning Drive
Spagnuolo admitting that he and Reid had this conversation is not surprising. The Broncos took possession for their final drive with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter. Both Reid and Spagnuolo had to assume the Broncos would milk the clock like they did to try and pull off an upset.
Allowing the Broncos to score a touchdown would have given Patrick Mahomes the ball back. Although the Chiefs offense had struggled the whole game, betting on Mahomes in the final minutes of a game to win is never a bad bet.
Ultimately, though, the two decided to bet on their defense, which had been playing well the whole game. While that almost backfired and cost the Chiefs their first loss of the season, it didn't.
Instead, fans got to witness one of the most epic moments in NFL history thanks to Spagnuolo and Reid's decision.
