The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver room is one of the positions that could use the most love when free agency begins next week. As it stands, the Chiefs only have six wideouts under contract, with the trio of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Jalen Royals being the only names of note.

Although Chiefs fans have some ideas for potential targets, a new — yet controversial name — is about to hit the open market.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that the New England Patriots will release WR Stefon Diggs "at the start of the 2026 league year next week."

The Chiefs already have more than enough troublemaking pass catchers. That said, Diggs still has something left in the tank, and even though a signing could be risky, the Chiefs should at least list the pros and cons of luring him to Missouri.

Stefon Diggs' Release Gives the Chiefs an Interesting Dilemma

Signing Diggs was always a gamble, which is why the Patriots structured his contract so that they could move on from him after a year. He had some good moments and showed chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye, but the distractions off the field and another quiet postseason run may have forced the Patriots' hand to cut him loose.

Now, Diggs can probably be had on a much more reasonable deal than the three-year, $63.5 million pact he made with the Patriots. If that's the case, and only if that's the case, the Chiefs should touch base with his representation, The Sports & Entertainment Group.

Interestingly, Kansas City is familiar with that agency, as it also represents cornerback Joshua Williams.

Despite coming off a major injury and being in his age-32 season, Diggs had 85 receptions on 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. However, his production dipped in the postseason, logging just 14 receptions on 20 targets for 110 yards and one touchdown and averaging 27.5 yards per game.

More than that, Diggs always comecomeswith plenty of baggage. Just last season, he went nuclear on social media for a controversial boat party video. Now, he is facing some serious assault accusations, which could drag on after his pretrial date was pushed to April 1.

That's also a part of the equation with a player who has burned bridges in almost every previous stop.

The Chiefs have more than enough on their plate with everything surrounding Rice. That's without even bringing up the legal issues that Worthy faced last year. If the Chiefs are going to roll the dice on a wide receiver with a knack for tabloids, they might as well focus on the duo they already have, or at least entertain a reunion with Tyreek Hill.

After Wednesday's Trent McDuffie trade, general manager Brett Veach will have nine draft picks to try to find some help for Patrick Mahomes, including the No. 9 selection. This draft class is deep at wide receiver, so he may choose to test his fortunes with a rookie instead of signing another problematic former big name.

Whatever the case, Diggs' sudden availability raises several questions for many teams, including the Chiefs. He still hasn't won a Super Bowl, and his best shot at one might come with head coach Andy Reid, who isn't a stranger to dealing with controversial WRs.
