The Kansas City Royals are rolling in Spring Training yet again, racing out to an undefeated record with exciting performances from the offense that has fans thinking of an even deeper postseason run than last year provided.

One of the biggest issues with the team in 2024 was the lack of a true power bat in the outfield. M.J. Melendez has plenty of potential and Hunter Renfroe came on strong in the second half of the year, though neither player has cemented themselves as the foundational bat the organization dreamed of.

There's a clear need on the roster for more power. Fortunately for Royals fans, there's one obvious free agent still available that would boost the club's offensive potential.

Royals Need to Sign Free Agent OF Alex Verdugo

Still only 28 years old, Alex Verdugo has intriguing potential as a power hitter for the Royals squad that desperately needs it. The former Boston Red Sox slugger has issues defensively, though possesses a strong arm and enough upside that he'd be worth adding to Kansas City's roster.

He ranked in the 96th percentile in Squared-Up percentage at Baseball Savant in 2024, a statistic that measures how effectively a batter makes contact with the ball. Despite hitting for a palty .233 average and only 13 home runs, he's the kind of guy who the Royals could use.

Kyle Isbel is a remarkable defender, though employing him in your outfield naturally reduces the offensive impact in your lineup. Finding guys to complement his defensive versatility while being able to serve as a DH on certain days goes a long way, and general manager J.J. Picollo likely recognizes the holes in the lineup. Even if Verdugo isn't an everyday player, he could still provide value.

In all likelihood, the roster that the Royals have now is the roster they'll have on Opening Day. Should Verdugo remain on the streets though, he's the perfect guy to bring in and give an opportunity to.
