The Kansas City Chiefs have arguably the best quarterback room in the league, anchored by the league's best player. It obviously isn't a hot take to say any quarterback group led by Patrick Mahomes is the best in the league. It isn't just Mahomes who impresses, though, with Gardner Minshew bringing extensive starting experience into his backup role. The veteran spent the last two seasons as a starting option before accepting a demotion to join a Super Bowl contender. Even Bailey Zappe, the expected QB3, offers starting experience as well.

With this in mind, the Chiefs are in a great position when it comes to depth. Still, the team has explored a myriad of options, including Spencer Petras, who was brought in for a tryout. Petras spent his college career with Iowa and Utah State, going undrafted in 2025. This led to the Chiefs giving the experienced college quarterback a chance in minicamp. Considering the superior options on the current roster, it doesn't come as a surprise that this didn't work out in the rookie's favor. However, his career isn't over just yet, having landed another opportunity.

Failed Chiefs QB Tryout Lands New Opportunity

The San Francisco 49ers have stability at the top of the depth chart with Brock Purdy locked into a starting role and former Patriots starter Mac Jones as the primary backup option. After this, the depth chart is very much in question with the franchise lacking a proven emergency quarterback. With this in mind, it is very possible that Petras could fight his way into the conversation with an impressive tryout.

Having so much starting experience at the college level offers a bit of value even for a player whose upside is very limited. The 49ers giving Petras a chance makes sense as they look to decide who is the best development project and emergency option behind Jones. It will be an interesting story to keep an eye on and see if the attempted Chief finds another path into the league.

For Kansas City, everything is already in place, with fans counting down the days until camp and preseason action begins. For the top contender in a loaded conference, the day cannot arrive soon enough.
