The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the most feared offensive units in the NFL today, as Patrick Mahomes and company are capable of lighting up the scoreboard each and every time they take the field.

Kansas City's dynamic offense has made the Chiefs an intriguing landing spot for veteran free agents looking to align themselves with a Super Bowl contender. That trend should continue to be the case as long as Mahomes is healthy and under center for Kansas City.

While the NFL Draft is the next big thing on the calendar for Chiefs GM Brett Veach, there are still some very talented veterans available on the open market. One player in particular could ultimately help fill a major position of need for the defending AFC champions and could very well be worth the gamble of bringing on board.

Signing JK Dobbins is Worth the Gamble for Chiefs

The Chiefs are thin at the running back position, this is no secret to anyone who follows Kansas City or the NFL in general. Even if the Chiefs elect to select a running back with one of their eight total picks in next week's draft, adding a veteran free agent makes a lot of sense for a team that is constantly in "win-now" mode.

From a pure skill set perspective, Dobbins seems like a pretty natural fit for the things that Kansas City likes to do when the ball is in their possession. The former Ohio State University standout is a more than capable runner who also has good enough hands to be a receiving threat out of the backfield.

In addition to his overall skill set, Dobbins is quite familiar with the AFC West thanks to his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, so that familiarity with the defenses in the division would only make the transition that much smoother for him.

As talented as Dobbins is, there is also some injury baggage that would come along with signing him and that cannot be ignored. Dobbins suffered a knee injury during his team's loss to the Baltimore Ravens in late November of 2024 and subsequently missed the remainder of the season.

What makes adding a player like Dobbins to the mix even more risky of a proposition is the fact that this particular injury was just the latest in a series of issues that Dobbins has faced since entering the league.

Despite those concerns, however, Dobbins was on pace for a career year with Los Angeles this past season prior to sustaining an injury to his knee. If he is capable of being anywhere close to that player again, his addition to Kansas City's offensive arsenal in the backfield along with Kareem Hunt, Isaiah Pacheco, and Carson Steele.

If the Chiefs are able to overlook those injury concerns, Dobbins could be well worth the risk for Kansas City to take on. Especially if they can land him on a short-term deal, which would seem likely given Dobbins is coming off a knee injury.
