Weeks ahead of the draft's first round, there was growing expectation that the Kansas City Chiefs would use one of their two picks to add a wide receiver.
After losing both Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster to free agency, it made sense to upgrade the position and offer a rehabbing Patrick Mahomes a new weapon. Instead, the franchise opted to add a corner and defensive tackle, giving coordinator Steve Spagnuolo much-needed reinforcements.
Aside from Spagnuolo, the biggest winner from this decision is receiver Rashee Rice. The pass catcher is entering a contract year and now not only remains the clear primary target but should be in the driver's seat in upcoming negotiations.
Kansas City has good reason for the lack of an extension, but did itself no favors by opting not to bring in a fallback option. Free agency has no remaining top targets at the position, and even if the Chiefs opt to add in the draft's later rounds, they'll be hard-pressed to find a talent capable of rivaling Rice's talent.
For the receiver, the issue hasn't been a fit within the offense or chemistry with Mahomes, but off-the-field concerns, which make an extension an obvious risk. However, opting not to add to the position in this year's first round clearly puts power back in Rice's hands, leaving the Chiefs with little option if the pass catcher has a great 2026 season.
Chiefs Give Rashee Rice Every Reason for Confidence After First Round Decisions
While it would've been ideal to see the Chiefs add to the position, it is hard to fault the additions that were made. The positive spin at receiver is the hope that this serves as motivation for Rice, who now has the confidence of being the team's primary target heading into the 2026 season. Even with Travis Kelce's return, the expectation will be that Rice will be the primary target when healthy.
Kansas City is putting itself in a dangerous position, even if the decision-making with the team's first two picks is hard to fault. If Rice has a great season, they're going to be forced to pay top dollar for what is a huge risk off-the-field. On the other hand, letting Rice walk away without a backup plan is difficult to explain to a fan base that is already a bit concerned about the position.
Regardless, there is no denying that Rice emerges from Thursday night's portion of the draft as a clear winner, remaining the featured target and having a chance to cash in on what should be a big 2026 season. Plain and simple, fans have to hope that Rice can both stay healthy and make smart decisions away from the field, making the team's upcoming decision a bit easier and likely adding more money to Rice's pocket.
