The Kansas City Chiefs are back on the field at Missouri Western State University for their first training camp on Tuesday. Chiefs fans are excited to see the team back in action, especially with how things ended in the Super Bowl.
Kansas City dealt with a couple of injuries at the wide receiver position, most notably to Rashee Rice (torn right LCL), which could’ve derailed the season. But the Chiefs found an adequate solution in Rice’s absence and were able to get back to the Super Bowl.
That said, Kansas City is pleased to have a healthy Rice for this upcoming season, who had a great rookie campaign in 2023, and believes he’s part of their future on offense with speedster Xavier Worthy.
On Tuesday, Chiefs fans got a chance to see the Rice-Mahomes connection on full display, and they did not skip a beat.
Chiefs WR Rashee Rice Picks Up Where He Left Off with Patrick Mahomes
According to ESPN’s Nate Taylor, the third-year wide receiver was labeled the biggest winner at the first practice as he was the most-targeted pass catcher.

In a video posted by Harold Kuntz of FOX4 News Kansas City, Mahomes targeted Rice inside the goal line on a zig route as the young wide receiver was able to shake free of the defender at the top of the route.
Last season, Rice posted two receptions (two targets) for 10 yards and a touchdown inside the red zone. However, as a rookie, the former SMU wideout scored six out of seven TDs inside that part of the field. He also had 16 receptions (22 targets) for 110 yards.
If the Chiefs can have Rice and Travis Kelce inside the red zone, it will make Kansas City that much tougher to stop in that part of the field.

In another video, Mahomes was seen targeting and hitting Rice on a drag route, which we know he has the skills to do damage underneath. As a rookie, he averaged 8.3 yards after the catch per reception. Then last season, Rice recorded 7.8 yards after the catch per reception.
It's clear Rice’s skill set will give KC’s passing game another dimension, especially when you add Worthy and Hollywood Brown’s abilities to stretch the field. However, it remains to be seen how much time he’ll miss after his role and actions in a multi-car crash in 2024.
