Why Isiah Pacheco Will Be the Chiefs MVP in Week 6 vs. Broncos
By Joe Summers
Step aside, Patrick Mahomes.
With all due respect to the two-time Super Bowl MVP, the Chiefs are Isiah Pacheco's team this week. In front of a national audience on Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos, Pacheco will have a career day as the Chiefs' MVP.
If the Chiefs defeat Denver for the 16th (!!) consecutive game, the lovable, energetic seventh-rounder out of Rutgers will be the reason why.
Isiah Pacheco to EXPLODE vs. Broncos Pathetic Run Defense
No exaggeration, the Broncos are on pace to have one of the worst run defenses in the history of the NFL. Opponents are averaging a league-most 165.7 yards per game.
The gap between Denver's league-worst mark and second-worst (Pittsburgh at 131.7 yards per game) is larger than that between the Steelers and 14th-worst Arizona (98.3 yards per game). It's downright comical how bad the Broncos are at stopping the run and it's Pacheco's time to eat.
Already this season against Denver, Breece Hall ran for 177 yards, Khalil Herbert for 103, Devon Achane for 203 with Raheem Mostert adding 82 and Brian Robinson for 87. Now, the Broncos have to contain one of the league's most difficult backs to tackle in Pacheco.
Pacheco ranks third amongst all NFL running backs in broken tackles (9) despite only having the 12th-most carries. He exhausts defenses with a "pedal-to-the-metal" approach, always churning his legs and fighting for extra yards.
We thought Pacheco accumulating 158 yards from scrimmage in a New Jersey homecoming would be the highlight of his season, but he's just getting started. Pacheco averaged 4.6 yards per carry in two games against the Broncos last year when their defense was among the league's best, so I can only imagine what he'll do on Thursday.
It's the perfect matchup for a player built to exploit Denver's biggest weakness. Expect a healthy dose of missed tackles and jovial yet punishing runs as Pacheco tortures the Broncos and eclipses the century mark for the second time this season.
Giddy up Broncos, this ride is about to get bumpy.
