After the Jackson County voters rejected a Royals stadium proposal, all signs were pointing to the team relocating to North Kansas City or Kansas. Kansas legislators had passed an aggressive plan to lure the Chiefs and the Royals away from Missouri and over to the Sunflower State.

The latest reporting, however, suggests that the move is far from a done deal. Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star reported that the Royals are continuing to have discussions about staying in the city and that the "vision of downtown baseball" is still there.

This is a major change from what has been previously reported. The most shocking part of it all is the new location that has emerged as a possibility.

Washington Square Park, just north of Crown Center and east of Union Station, has never been discussed as a potential site in initial discussions. The Royals are reportedly studying the viability of the site, but they haven't disclosed their preference, according to The Star.

This will be a major hurdle for Mayor Quinton Lucas as well. Despite the public vote failing, he is trying to keep the team downtown, without having to resort to another vote. Whether he succeeds in this politically risky attempt remains to be seen.

The Chiefs and the Royals have their leases at the Truman Sports Complex until January 2031 but where these teams will locate after that is still one of the biggest questions for the fanbase.
