Salvador Perez Shares Return Timeline After Scary Injury
By Joe Summers
Salvador Perez suffered a scary injury during Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Mets, but it sounds like he'll be back sooner than expected.
The Royals listed their All-Star catcher as day-to-day with a left groin/hip strain and he will not play on Monday against the White Sox, but Perez announced on social media that he'd be back on Tuesday.
Responding to a worried fan traveling from Puerto Rico to watch Perez play, the affable slugger assured the worried fan (and all of Kansas City) that all would be okay.
Royals News: Salvador Perez Announces He'll Return From Injury on Tuesday
This simple exchange is not only evidence of Perez's enduring legacy as one of the most respected and well-liked players in MLB, but it's incredible news for a Royals team that finds itself in the thick of the playoff race through the first 16 games of the season.
It's obviously early, though Perez's importance to the lineup cannot be overstated. He's hitting .339 with four home runs and 11 RBI while serving as the heart and soul of the locker room. Perez has spent his entire career with the franchise and remains the only active player from the 2015 World Series team, so he's the perfect leader for the young rising stars in the clubhouse.
Kansas City sits at 10-6, just a half-game behind Cleveland in the AL Central, with the best run differential in all of baseball (+37). Obviously there's a lot of season left, but this is the first time in years that the Royals have looked competitive.
Losing Perez for weeks to injury could have derailed the hot start. Even if he misses some time moving forward to ensure he stays healthy, this is the best piece of news that Royals fans could have received.
