Royals Disrespected by MLB 2023 Gold Glove Finalists
By Joe Summers
The disrespect is getting out of hand.
For the second straight season, no Royal will win a Rawlings Gold Glove award as the organization was snubbed from the finalists announced yesterday.
Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia and Zack Greinke all have legitimate beefs and an argument can be made that Michael Massey should be upset as well. Kansas City may have had a poor season overall, but these players deserved to be recognized for their stellar defensive contributions.
Royals Disrespected by Gold Glove Finalists
Royals players are justifiably upset. The Gold Glove has long been marred by absurd voting practices and questionable decisions, but this is blasphemous.
Kansas City had at least one finalist for 12 consecutive seasons, with at least one player securing a Gold Glove for 11 straight years until that streak was snapped in 2022.
Salvador Perez won't get the opportunity to win a sixth Gold Glove and Zack Greinke is stuck at six himself despite leading all American League pitchers in Defensive Runs Saved (6). Unfortunately for Royals fans, the disrespect doesn't end there.
Witt Jr. led all American League shortstops in Outs Above Average (14) during an MVP-caliber season, while Maikel Garcia led AL third basemen in the same metric (13).
Even Michael Massey had the best fielding percentage (.993) of AL second basemen. That's five different players who could have been finalists and four that absolutely should have been, yet none were selected.
These Royals deserved recognition for their fantastic performances. It's a shame MLB overlooked their efforts, serving as another reminder of a truth we know too well: if you don't win, no one will pay attention.
