Should the Chiefs bring in another Pro Bowl tight end?

We've got one Pro Bowl tight end already, why not add a second?

That's the thinking behind a recently proposed trade by Bill Barnwell of ESPN. Barnwell's proposal would send 11-year veteran Zach Ertz to Kansas City with the Chiefs giving the Arizona Cardinals a sixth-round draft pick in return.

If the Cardinals were willing to eat most of Ertz's salary in exchange for the pick, we could have something here.

Proposed Trade Sends Zach Ertz to Chiefs

  • Chiefs get: TE Zach Ertz
  • Cardinals get: 2025 sixth-round draft pick

Given the Chiefs' lack of reliable pass-catching options and the increased concern around Travis Kelce's health, adding Ertz would make sense.

Ertz's peak years were with the Eagles, where he amassed 579 catches for 6,267 yards over a storied nine-year career. That being said, he's still got some juice left in the tank. He's adept at finding soft spots in coverage while relying on his dependable hands and mental acumen.

Ertz has at least six catches in three of Arizona's five games this year, leading the Cardinals in targets (34) and receptions (22). He's toiling away on a mediocre team, so a trade to the Chief would give him another real shot at a Super Bowl ring too.

For now, Ertz could serve as another reliable veteran for Patrick Mahomes to rely on. If Kelce suffers another injury this year and has to miss any time, Ertz could serviceably fill that role too. At the least, Ertz could fill that role better than anyone else currently on the roster.

Barnwell notes that Arizona would likely need to absorb Ertz's salary and that's a MUST in my opinion. Kansas City has enough issues with the cap and numerous players up for contract, so it'd be nonsensical to bring in another hefty contract.

We'll see if Brett Veach has any tricks up his sleeve, but Ertz is certainly an interesting option to consider.
