The Chiefs roster is mostly set but they suddenly have an opportunity to add a proven veteran to the offense at a position of need for, presumably, a low-cost.

Former No. 4 overall pick Leonard Fournette, selected in the same draft as Patrick Mahomes, wants back in the NFL and intends to sign with a team before the season starts. Considering Kansas City still doesn't have a designated third running back, Fournette could be an ideal fit.

He had 135 yards from scrimmage and TD against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl as a Buccaneer, so the organization is already familiar with what he can do.

RB Leonard Fournette Could Be Ideal Chiefs Signing

Would Fournette make a huge impact or even see the field much? Probably not, but he's capable of spelling Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the ability to take over in a pinch should disaster strike.

It feels like Fournette is at the end of his career, but he's only 29 years old with championship experience. He transformed his game in Tampa Bay and became a legitimate receiving threat of the backfield, catching 143 passes in his last two seasons there.

Having been tied to the Chiefs in the past, a cheap, one-year deal with Fournette would give him a chance to chase a ring and Kansas City insurance in the backfield.

Reports indicate the Chiefs are happy with the running backs they already have but Brett Veach is never one to turn down an opportunity to improve the roster. Provided Fournette would be comfortable taking the backseat and letting Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire take the shine, it's a logical marriage.

When you have the chance to three-peat, you leave no stone unturned. Even if Kansas City doesn't ultimately sign Fournette, expect Veach to complete his due diligence regardless.
