Perfect Chiefs Offseason Addition Officially Set to Hit Free Agency
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs have a big need at wide receiver and one of the most productive players of the generation is on his way to free agency.
Mike Evans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were unable to come to an agreement on an extension and now the Bucs will take on $7.4 million in dead cap money as a result of Monday's deadline.
While the two sides are still communicating in hopes of an extension, this now paves the way for other teams to potentially poach the five-time Pro Bowler.
Chiefs Roster News: WR Mike Evans Headed to Free Agency
Evans is coming off his 10th consecutive 1,000-yard season and led the NFL in receiving TDs this year (13). He's a dynamic force that would immediately help the Chiefs' offense and likely make them favorites to win next year's Super Bowl.
With Rashee Rice emerging and Travis Kelce still capable of delivering in big moments, Evans would give the Chiefs a similar offense to the ones in early years of Patrick Mahomes' career.
A two-time All-Pro, Evans has spent his entire career in Tampa Bay. It's unclear what kind of money he's asking for or if he's even willing to leave the Bucs, but he has to be dreaming of another Super Bowl run with Mahomes under center and Andy Reid calling the shots.
Tampa Bay had a strong season with Baker Mayfield, though even Evans must know the ceiling is much higher in Kansas City. Mayfield's contract was voided today as well, so it's possible the Bucs lose two leaders of their offense.
If Evans wants another Lombardi Trophy, considering a move to the Chiefs is his best option.
