Patrick Mahomes Highlights Stunning Component of Louis Rees-Zammit's Game
By Joe Summers
Three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes became the latest to join the Louis Rees-Zammit hype train ahead of training camp getting started on July 21.
Appearing on the Riggle's Picks podcast with Kansas City-native Rob Riggle, Mahomes gushed about the former rugby star and discussed his progress over the summer. Rees-Zammit has seen work at a variety of positions, with special teams appearing to be his best fit, but he could be more involved offensively than initially thought.
Though the Chiefs have Rees-Zammit listed as a running back, Mahomes is impressed with his receiving ability, potentially giving the rookie another path to playing time.
Patrick Mahomes Says Louis Rees-Zammit 'Never Drops the Football'
"We're starting him at running back. He's going to do a lot of special teams stuff," Mahomes explained when asked about his new teammate. "He can actually catch...It looks different. He catches it like he's catching a rugby, but he never drops the football so you don't complain on it."
Rees-Zammit has never played American football. Aside from the mental aspect of the game, his technical skill and ability to catch were among his biggest questions as a prospect. If he actually never drops the ball? That opens up a whole new set of possibilities.
"I think what's been the best part about it," Mahomes continued. "He works his tail off, man. He understands he needs to get better, he needs to continue to work, but the athletic ability is unreal."
He said that Rees-Zammit's reported 24-MPH speed in a rugby game "is real. My boy, he's fast, and it's just about him learning football now compared to rugby...You know he's got the toughness, but until he gets in the game and understands how to move and how to use that athletic ability, you don't know exactly where he's at, but if he's in space, man, he can make stuff happen."
That's extremely high praise from Mahomes overall, especially considering Rees-Zammit is theoretically fighting for a roster spot. I believe his versatility will earn him a place on the team, and he seemingly has a fan in his corner with Mahomes.
If Rees-Zammit turns into a valuable weapon, the Chiefs will field one of the NFL's fastest offenses with a variety of players capable of generating a huge play. Fans and coaches will get a great look at his development at training camp. Here's hoping Mahomes' assessment is spot on.
