Kansas Football Loses Valuable Coach to Nevada
By Jovan Alford
The Kansas Jayhawks’ coaching staff will look slightly different next season after getting to a bowl game for a second straight year and winning nine games.
Earlier this offseason, Kansas saw offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Andy Kotelnicki leave the program to become the new offensive coordinator at Penn State. The Jayhawks didn’t panic as they hired Jeff Grimes to take over for Kotelenicki.
However, head coach Lance Leipold will need to make another replacement on his coaching staff as senior analyst Matt Lubick is heading to the Mountain West.
Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported Monday that Lubick will be named Nevada’s offensive coordinator. Lubick spent the last two seasons at Kansas while being diagnosed with Leukemia on Oct. 7. McMurphy adds that Lubick has been undergoing treatment at Anschutz Center for Advanced Medicine in Aurora, CO.
The Jayhawks had one of the best offenses in the Big 12 last season, averaging 34.8 points per game (fourth-best in the conference) and rushing for 206 yards a game (fourth-best in the Big 12).
Despite the departures of Lubick and Kotelnicki this offseason, the Jayhawks’ offense will look to continue to build off the success over the last two years.
Kansas should have a healthy Jalon Daniels at quarterback and has a rising star in running back Devin Neal, who could’ve gone to the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Neal decided to return to Lawrence, KS, for one more year and establish himself as one of the best running backs in the country.
