Maybe all of our concerns were a bit overblown?
This version of the Kansas City Chiefs is the most complete team the organization has ever fielded and we've got the advanced stats to prove it.
With a 6-1 record, the Chiefs have the NFL's longest winning streak and control their destiny for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. If it looks like this balanced team can beat you in a variety of ways, that's because it can.
Is This the Most Complete Chiefs Team Ever?
According to at least one comprehensive metric, the answer is a resounding yes.
Aaron Schatz invented DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), a statistic that "measures a team's efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent."
It's widely regarded as one of the best indicators of a team's performance and Chiefs fans should be THRILLED with the results through seven weeks.
We saw Kansas City's complimentary football on full display in Sunday's win over the Chargers. Patrick Mahomes and the offense put up points in bunches in the first half, the defense shut Los Angeles down in the second half and Mecole Hardman returned a punt 50 yards to set-up the game-sealing TD.
Moving forward, the Chiefs' outlook is exceptionally bright.
Each of the last five teams to rank in the top-five in DVOA in all three phases through Week 7 won the whole dang Super Bowl. That'll play!
The Chiefs have some stiff competition near the top of the league, namely the Ravens ranking fifth in offensive DVOA and second in defensive while the 49ers are second on offense and sixth on defense.
However, Baltimore's special teams unit is 18th and San Francisco's is 20th, giving Kansas City a massive advantage in the forgotten third. The Chiefs have routinely ranked near the top of the NFL on special teams under Dave Toub and this year is no exception.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Kansas City is in as good of a position as any team to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
After all the hand-wringing and frustrations throughout the season so far, the Chiefs are right back on top where they belong.
