How the Chiefs Can Keep Both Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed
By Joe Summers
Chiefs Kingdom's attention is now on the upcoming contract negotiations for Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed, though they're just two of 25 free agents Brett Veach must consider in the offseason.
Despite the tricky cap situation, there is still a way for Kansas City to keep both Jones and Sneed, though it'd almost certainly just be for this upcoming season as the organization attempts to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Check out the scenario laid out by Conner Cristopherson of Arrowhead Report below.
Chiefs Free Agency: How KC Can Keep Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed
There's a lot that needs to happen, but the first step is cutting Marquez Valdes-Scantling or reducing him to the veteran minimum. We've expected that to happen all year anyway, though that's the first step.
Following that, the Chiefs can restructure Patrick Mahomes' contract to free up some space, and then comes the hard part.
Chris Jones would need to agree to a four-year, $118 million contract in this scenario. That's less than what he was reportedly looking for, though his enthusiastic attitude at the parade and love of Kansas City may have changed his outlook at bit.
The final step? Franchise tagging L'Jarius Sneed. This is not something he would want, but it would still give him around $18 million, an excellent payday for one season. He and the Chiefs would likely part ways after 2024-25, though this seems to be the most realistic scenario for Kansas City to keep both defensive stars.
We'll see what happens in the coming weeks and if Jones is even willing to accept that kind of deal. For now, the potential reunion still has Chiefs Kingdom hoping for the best.
