Former Kansas State star QB Skylar Thompson is suddenly one of the NFL's most important players. After Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa's scary concussion on Thursday Night Football, Thompson is suddenly Miami's starter.

Originally a seventh-round draft pick in 2022, Thompson has now appeared in eight NFL games following his brief work against the Bills. He completed eight of 14 pass attempts for 80 yards on Thursday.

Thompson spent five years as a Wildcat, establishing himself as one of the best QBs in the Big 12 with some rushing ability as well. Now, the Dolphins' playoff hopes might rest on his shoulders.

While the organization intends to sign another QB for depth, the starting job is Thompson's while Tagovailoa is out. It's not yet clear how long the latest concussion will sideline him, though there are already murmors that his season should be over.

During his career at Kansas State, Thompson completed 62.4% of his passes for 7,134 yards with 42 TDs to just 16 interceptions, accumulating a 142.1 rating in the process. He added 1,087 yards and 26 TDs on the ground, though hasn't achieved the same level of success at the professional level.

Thompson played in 7 games in 2022, throwing just one TD to three interceptions while completing 57.1% of his pass attempts. Even though he's not considered a great starting option, there's no denying the talent on Miami's offense. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De'Von Achane are one of the best trios in the league, so Thompson will have every opportunity to succeed.

The Dolphins take on the Seattle Seahawks on the road a week from Sunday. Extra prep time will help Thompson, and now it's up to him to take advantage of the chance he suddenly has.
