Former Chiefs QB Suffers Significant Neck Injury in Preseason Debut With Rival
By Joe Summers
Former Chiefs QB Shane Buechele suffered a significant neck injury during his first preseason game with the Bills. He'll likely miss significant time, and Buffalo has already signed a new backup QB following the news.
Buechele was with Kansas City for three seasons before being cut in 2023. He joined the Bills' practice squad after being released, though has yet to receive snaps in a regular season game.
Nonetheless, he was electric in the preseason for the Chiefs and quickly became a fan-favorite, so the Kingdom hopes for the best with Buechele's health.
Former Chiefs QB Shane Buechele Suffers Significant Neck Injury
Buechele was at practice on Monday though head coach Sean McDermott believes he'll miss a significant amount of time with the ailment. The 26-year-old dual-threat QB had the inside track to win the Bills' backup job but now must focus on his health.
In 2023's preseason with the Chiefs, Buechele completed 64.4% of his passes for 349 yards (7.8 yards per attempt) while displaying an impressive scrambling ability as well. Some fans believed he should've made Kansas City's roster, though the decision didn't ultimately cost Kansas City.
He completed six of 10 passing attempts for the Bills before being injured. It's not yet clear if Buechele will be placed on the Injured Reserve list, yet that feels likely given McDermott's comments.
It's a large setback for a promising player and disappointing news to say the least. Here's hoping he gets back on the field as soon as possible, especially given it seemed Buechele had finally found a home and role for a contender.
