Former Kansas City Chiefs second-round pick Breeland Speaks will hope to land on another team’s 53-man roster after another successful stint in spring football.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Sunday that they’ve waived six players ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, including Speaks. The 28-year-old Speaks joined the Jaguars earlier this month after finishing his second year playing spring football with the Michigan Panthers.

The former second-round pick had two total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a quarterback hit. With the 6-foot-3 defensive lineman getting waived by the Jaguars, there’s a chance he could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Speaks didn’t have a long tenure with the Chiefs as he only spent his rookie season with the franchise. The 28-year-old defensive lineman had 24 combined tackles, eight quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Speaks was placed on injured reserve in Aug. 2019 and then suspended in December of that season by the NFL. After serving his suspension, Kansas City activated the former Ole Miss standout in Feb. 2020 before being waived in Sept. 2020.

The former Chiefs defensive end has bounced around the NFL over the last few years, joining various practice squads and receiving numerous tryouts. However, he hasn’t found a permanent home.

But to his credit, Speaks has spent the last two years playing in the USFL and UFL, where he’s made a name for himself, while also showing teams that he can still play at a high level.
