During his nine-year career, Nelson compiled 456 tackles, 78 deflected passes, 13 interceptions, four forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. He became a team captain for the Texans, surrendering just a 73.3 passer rating when targeted in 2023.
As a Chief, the former Oregon State standout had 182 tackles and four interceptions in four seasons.
In a telephone interview with KPRC 2, Nelson said, "Retirement, after thinking it over and having some talks with my family, I think it’s time for me to take a step back and spend more time with my family. We’re expecting a newborn this coming month and I wanted to devote all of my time and energy to that and various business ventures off the field. I’m extremely proud of what I was able to do in the game of football."
Only 30 years old, Nelson could likely still be an impact player in the league though wants to spend time with his family and exit on his own terms.
The Chiefs have become synonymous with excellent cornerbacks over the last decade and Nelson helped serve as a bridge between Kansas City's defenses of old and the new guard. He never achieved great playoff success, though Nelson enjoyed a fruitful career regardless.
