Failed Chiefs WR Gets One Last Chance From Desperate NFC Rival
By Joe Summers
Former Chiefs WR John Ross, who infamously retired in the middle of training camp with the team, has joined the Eagles' practice squad in one last attempt to make an NFL comeback.
Philadelphia is ravaged by injuries at receiver, with both A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith trending towards missing Week 4. Ross was on their practice squad this summer but released before Week 1, and now he's back in the building.
The Eagles have Super Bowl aspirations, yet their season has been mired in questionable coaching decisions and a struggling passing game. Ross likely isn't the answer, but that won't stop him from trying to be part of the solution.
Eagles Sign Former Chiefs WR John Ross to Practice Squad
Originally a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Ross was infamously selected just one spot before Patrick Mahomes by the Bengals, a hilarious decision in retrospect. For his career, Ross has 62 catches for 957 yards and 11 TDs. He hasn't appeared in a game since 2021 with the Giants.
If he impresses on the practice squad, it's possible Ross could earn a call-up to the active roster in Week 5. Should the Eagles' key pass-catchers not be able to play, there's certainly an opportunity to stand out for a passing game in need of a jolt.
Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson, and Parris Campbell are Philadelphia's only healthy players at the position. Somebody has to suit up, so perhaps Ross can finally get back on an NFL field.
Either way, this is likely his last chance to prove he belongs on a roster. We're rooting for him, though it's fortunate that the Chiefs aren't in the same dire position that the Eagles are.
