The Chiefs are massive favorites over the Chargers in Week 4, and the betting odds give us insight on whether or not star QB Justin Herbert will play.

Los Angeles foolishly played Herbert on a high ankle sprain in Week 3. He aggravated the injury. Now, it looks like it'll be Taylor Heinicke under center in a key divisional game instead of Herbert, at least if the odds are to be believed.

Even during the disaster years under Brandon Staley, Herbert hasn't been an underdog of seven or more against the Chiefs since 2021. Considering the Chargers are 2-1 with a renewed identity under Jim Harbaugh, it's hard to believe they'd be seven-point 'dogs unless Herbert wasn't suiting up.

Chiefs vs. Chargers Betting Odds

  • Spread: Chiefs -7 (-118) | Chargers +7 (-104)
  • Moneyline: Chiefs (-375) | Chargers (+300)
  • Total: 39.5 (Over -115) | (Under -105)

These odds come from FanDuel Sportsbook. When you pair the large spread with the low total, it seems clear that Herbert is a long-shot to play. Even if he is under center, it seems that he'll be limited.

The Chiefs have five straight wins over the Chargers, covering the spread three times in that stretch. The under has hit in two straight contests.

Harbaugh has embraced a run-heavy approach, determined to control the clock with long, sustained drives. Kansas City's offense is similar, relying on lengthy drives with a lot of plays to suffocate opponents. Los Angeles' strategy may not be effective, as the Chiefs are a top-12 unit against the run this season, allowing just 4.3 yards per attempt.

It sounds like Herbert is a game-time decision, though the odds tell us he probably won't go. We'll see what happens, though this is shaping up to be Kansas City's easiest matchup thus far in the 2024 season.
