The Chiefs took a big step towards potentially keeping Chris Jones this offseason, picking up the option to retain his contract and the ability to franchise tag him.

It's unclear what the organization's plans are for Jones, who would cost the team north of $32 million on a franchise tag.

Nonetheless, this is a positive first step for fans hoping to keep Jones long-term, who publicly declared his desire to stay in Kansas City at the Super Bowl parade on Wednesday.

To be clear, this decision does not have any tangible impact on the negotiations with Chris Jones and the Chiefs. All it does is allow the organization to extend the franchise tag, which they almost certainly will not do.

Kansas City's cap situation creates a difficult problem for Brett Veach to solve this offseason. Between Jones, L'Jarius Sneed and essentially the entire linebacking group, the Chiefs' general manager may face his most challenging decisions he's had in his tenure.

How do you allocate money for Jones, Sneed, Nick Bolton, Willie Gay Jr., Drue Tranquill and others, just to name a few?

I don't know. Luckily, it's not up to me. Veach has a wild offseason in front of him, but this is a step in the right direction towards retaining the best defensive player of the era.
