By Cem Yolbulan
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made headlines this offseason with off-the-field controversies. Heading into their Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, however, Chiefs fans are more worried about Butker's performance on the gridiron. It turns out, that the talented kicker has extended his range to 60+ yards into the wind, according to special teams coordinator Dave Toub, as reported by Chiefs insider Pete Sweeney.
Chiefs News: K Harrison Butker Extends His Range
This shouldn't surprise Chiefs fans who have been following Butker's improvement from year to year. He has been extending his range over the seasons as he hit a 60-yard field goal against the Broncos last year during Thursday Night Football. That one had plenty of room to spare, highlighting his ability to kick even longer.
That wasn't even his longest-made field goal. In 2022, after he came back from his ankle injury against the Buffalo Bills, Butker hit a 62-yard field goal, breaking the record at Arrowhead Stadium. That was only the 15th field goal in NFL history 62 yards or longer.
Even more impressively, Butker made the longest field goals in the Super Bowl with a 57-yarder last season, becoming the fourth kicker in history with three Super Bowl wins.
Butker went 33/35 on field goals last season and made all 38 of his extra-point attempts. He will once again be one of the most reliable kickers in the league this season.
The Chiefs may also have different plans for Harrison Butker on special teams this season. With the new kickoff rules, Dave Toub had alluded to the possibility that other players, most likely Justin Reid, potentially handling kickoffs. Because of the new rules, the Chiefs could choose to protect Butker instead of involving him in coverage and tackling.
Regardless of whether he is the main kickoff guy or not, Butker will undoubtedly be one of the most consistent players for Kansas City starting Week 1.
