When you coach the best secondary in football and are a veteran trusted advisor to the best defensive coordinator in football, other teams are inevitably going to be interested.

That's the case for Chiefs' defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, who is reportedly interviewing with the San Francisco 49ers to take over their vacant defensive coordinator position. This would be a massive loss for Kansas City after already losing linebackers coach Ken Flajole, potentially leaving two major holes on the defensive coaching staff heading into the offseason.

Having been in the NFL since 2001, Merritt deserves the opportunity but would be a big loss nonetheless.

Chiefs News: 49ers Interviewing Defensive Backs Coach Dave Merritt

Merritt's reputation is well-known across the league, having spent time as an assistant coach with the Jets, Giants, Dolphins and now Chiefs. He's been the defensive backs coach in Kansas City since 2019 and has five total Super Bowl rings.

He's done a fantastic job helping develop L'Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie into All-Pro caliber players, though his success stories include players like Charvarius Ward as well. Merritt was with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo with the Giants too, so he's got years of experience as a trusted advisor and is a quality candidate for the 49ers' open job.

San Francisco knows first-hand how effective Merritt's group can be in big moments, having lost a pair of Super Bowls to the Chiefs in recent years.

The results of the interview are not yet reported, though Kansas City could soon lose a valuable coach to a key rival.
