The Chiefs prioritized keeping a majority of their veterans from last year's Super Bowl team this offseason and they've continued that trend, re-signing free-agent linebacker Jack Cochrane on Tuesday.

Cochrane is a third-year player out of South Dakota who primarily plays on special teams though did start at linebacker in the Week 13 loss to the Packers and the Week 18 win over the Chargers. He was in for over 79% of special teams snaps this year, leading all Chiefs in that category.

He was an exclusive rights free agent, meaning it'll be a one-year contract at the league minimum for players entering their third season in the NFL.

It's no surprise that Kansas City elected to keep Cochrane. Dave Toub has sway in the organization and he used Cochrane more than any other player on his special teams unit. Cochrane proved capable of filling in on defense too, notching a combined 15 tackles across his two starts.

He originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent and now gets a chance to earn a third Super Bowl ring in as many professional seasons. With Willie Gay Jr. now on the Saints, it's possible that Cochrane sees expanded playing time at linebacker in the 2024-25 season.

Cochrane is a great example of the value the Chiefs can gain from signing and developing undrafted free agents. Most of the attention is paid to early-round selections, though the unheralded post-draft acquisitions can be just as important.

As we get set for the 2024 NFL Draft over the next few days, don't forget to pay attention to the moves the Chiefs make in the immediate aftermath as well.
