Chiefs Playmaker Getting Under Teammates' Skin in Camp
By Joe Summers
Chiefs LB Drue Tranquill quickly made a name for himself among fans with his stellar on-field play, and he's now clearly feeling more comfortable in his standing with the team.
Those in attendance at Tuesday's practice noted Tranquill's fiery approach, unafraid to get in an offensive player's face and start a skirmish.
He was involved in an incident with Rashee Rice on Monday, even needing to be held back by Patrick Mahomes to prevent an escalation. The combativeness certainly isn't an issue, though Tranquill hasn't been shy about getting under his teammates' skin.
Chiefs LB Drue Tranquill Getting Under Teammates' Skin at Practice
Tranquill appeared on Cody & Gold on 610 Sports Radio after Tuesday's practice, chalking the incidents up to competitiveness. He was lighthearted in his interview, noting these types of battles build up the team and fuel a collective fire.
After signing a three-year extension this offseason, Tranquill is suddenly one of the most important defenders on the team. He was magnificent in 2023, especially in pass coverage, perfectly complementing the more brash style of Nick Bolton at the same position.
Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Tranquill is transitioning into a savvy veteran after being a wide-eyed youngster finding his way. He's got a home in Kansas City now, letting him fully embrace the valuable role Steve Spagnuolo needs him to play.
For now, that role includes testing his offensive counterparts. If Tranquill helps prepare them for the challenges they'll face in the regular season, he's doing his job. In the end, the Chiefs should be better for it, even if it seems like an issue at first glance.
Tranquill is a beloved teammate passing the time at a competitive camp in brutal weather. None of these incidents are an issue, though it's still humorous to watch unfold from afar.
