Chiefs Officially Sign Star Defender to Record Contract Extension
By Joe Summers
After much speculation and concern over Chris Jones' future with the Chiefs, the star defensive lineman has officially agreed to a five-year extension with Kansas City, keeping one of the generation's best players locked up as the team tries to win a third straight Super Bowl.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jones will sign a five-year deal with $95 million guaranteed. There will be no contentious holdout this year - Jones and the Chiefs took care of business quickly this time.
Here's the latest from Schefter:
Chiefs Sign Chris Jones to Contract Extension
Jones has 26 combined sacks over the last two seasons and is a beloved teammate and member of the community. It's clear that Brett Veach and Andy Reid view Jones as a cornerstone. Alongside Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Jones completes the "big three" that've been around for all three Super Bowls.
For his career, Jones has 273 tackles, 75.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and even a pair of interceptions over eight years, all with the Chiefs.
Now 29-years-old, it appears Jones has a legitimate chance to stay with Kansas City for his entire career. Kelce is likely to retire as a Chief, as is Mahomes, making three legendary stars in the Kingdom that could spend their whole careers with the organization.
All eyes will now turn to L'Jarius Sneed's status, but it's a wonderful day for Chiefs fans no matter what. Kansas City currently has the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl at +650, though I'd expect those odds to shorten quickly now that Jones is back for sure.
