With so much uncertainty around a potential L'Jarius Sneed trade (and the looming threat of his departure next offseason even if he's not traded), the Kansas City Chiefs can't feel great about their starting cornerback situation. They're not exactly flush with cap space, but they still may end up in the market for a new starter at the position.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell looked at the ideal landing spots for 20 remaining free agents, and Chiefs fans will like what he had to say about their chances of grabbing the best one on the market.

Chiefs Rumors: Xavien Howard a Free Agent Target?

Barnwell named the Chiefs the "best fit" for former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard. A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Howard is unquestionably the best cornerback still available in free agency.

Howard admittedly had a down year in 2023, but considering he's only 30 years old it's not like we should be assuming he's lost a major step or is too far past his prime or anything. Plus a "down year" by Howard's standards still means limiting opposing QBs to an 86.7 passer rating when targeted in coverage.

Howard has expressed interest in playing for a contender, and Barnwell highlights his man-to-man coverage skills and ability to generate takeaways (league leader in interceptions in 2018 and 2020) as key pieces of what make him such a good fit for the Chiefs.

Even with uncertainty at the cornerback spot, the Chiefs are +650 to win another Super Bowl next season.

An addition like Howard might be what they need to take the jump into being favorites once again.
