Chiefs Get Major News on Potential Andy Reid Contract Extension
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid reportedly took a major step towards a new contract extension that would keep the three-time Super Bowl champion in Kansas City while making him the highest paid coach in the NFL.
NFL.com's Tom Pelissero writes that the two sides are expected to begin negotiations in the coming weeks, noting that general manager Brett Veach is likely to begin negotiations on his own deal as well.
After rampant speculation throughout the season that Reid could retire, it seems he's fully committed to leading the Chiefs as they try to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Chiefs News: Andy Reid Reportedly Set for Massive Contract Extension
According to Pelissero, "Reid is believed to rank roughly eighth among head coaches in average annual value on his contract -- and third in the AFC West after the big-money additions in the past two years of Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh, respectively."
Since head coaching salaries aren't public knowledge, it's tough to know exactly how much coaches are making, though it's fair to assume that Reid is underpaid for the incredible success he's achieved in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have eight consecutive AFC West titles and four Super Bowl appearances in the last five seasons, resulting in three Lombardi Trophies. During his 11 seasons with the franchise, Reid has a 128-51 record in the regular season and a 16-7 mark in the playoffs.
He's widely regarded as the best coach in the league. Soon, it sounds like his salary will reflect that notion as well.
