A couple surprising names popped up, but the report bodes well for Willie Gay Jr.

We're getting closer to an epic Super Bowl rematch between the Chiefs and 49ers a week from Sunday and Kansas City officially released its first injury report ahead of the matchup.

The Chiefs did not have practice today but still issued the report, indicating what players' statuses would be if the team did hit the field.

See the updates for several key players below.

Chiefs Injury News: First Super Bowl Report Issued

Chris Jones, Isiah Pacheco and L'Jarius Sneed are all not particularly concerning, likely just resting up various ailments they've suffered throughout this postseason run.

The biggest news comes from the other three players listed there. Willie Gay Jr.'s ability to potentially log a limited practice bodes well for his status for the Super Bowl, but it appears likely Joe Thuney's year is over following a pectoral tear.

Nick Allegretti was tremendous stepping in for Thuney, though it'll still be a blow to play the Super Bowl without the NFL's best guard. Star DE Charles Omenihu surprisingly tore his ACL despite post-game assurances he'd play, so his season is almost certainly over as well.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs withstood injury concerns in the first three playoff wins and I've got confidence in this roster and coaching staff. Notable young players like Deon Bush and Allegretti of course made huge plays against the Ravens - I trust them to do it again.

We'll keep you updated on everyone's injury status daily as news becomes available heading to the Super Bowl.
