Chiefs Get Important Injury Update on Kadarius Toney
By Jovan Alford
The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs made one big notable move ahead of Sunday night’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that wide receiver Kadairus Toney is not expected to play in Super Bowl 58. Schefter adds that Toney wasn’t listed on the Chiefs’ final injury report for the Super Bowl.
Without Toney, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes will lean on Rashee Rice, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Justin Watson at wide receiver.
The former University of Florida standout returned to practice earlier this month after not playing in the AFC title game against the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Andy Reid was asked about Toney’s playing status for Super Bowl 58 earlier this week and said, “We’ll see."
The last time we saw the 25-year-old wide receiver on the field was in Week 15 against the New England Patriots. Toney only had two receptions (four targets) for five yards.
It’s been a disappointing season for the young wideout as he played a significant role in Kansas City’s Super Bowl 57 win over the Philadelphia Eagles last season. This season, Toney had 27 receptions (38 targets) for 169 yards and a touchdown.
One does have to wonder what the future holds for Toney, as he didn’t play a single snap in any of the Chiefs’ previous three playoff games leading up to the Super Bowl. The young wideout is explosive when he gets the ball in his hands but has had more puzzling plays and drops this season.
