Chiefs Contributor Finally Back After Several Missed Practices
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs began their fourth day of training camp on Wednesday and veteran CB Kelvin Joseph is back in action after missing the first few days of practices.
Joseph is among several members of the secondary battling for a roster spot, drawing high praise throughout the summer for his impressive work. After trading away L'Jarius Sneed to the Titans this offseason, Kansas City needs multiple defenders to step up and Joseph is making a name for himself as a possibility.
A 2021 second-round pick by Dallas, the former Kentucky standout has always had the profile of a contributor and might have found an environment in which he can flourish.
Chiefs News: CB Kelvin Joseph Returns to Practice
After two solid but unspectacular campaigns with the Cowboys, Joseph played with the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks before joining the Chiefs.
In his career, he has 39 tackles, four deflected passes, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Opposing quarterbacks completed only 47.1% of their passes for an 82.7 passer rating during Joseph's rookie season though he's struggled to recreate that effectiveness.
Brett Veach is adept at finding former high draft picks who flamed out with their first team and turning them into contributors. The organization obviously hopes Joseph can be the latest example of that phenomenon, and Kansas City's defensive ceiling becomes higher if they suddenly add a quality second-round type of player into the mix.
Especially against the speedy receivers the Chiefs can throw at you, I'm excited to see how Joseph looks with the pads on. He's likely a fifth or sixth cornerback at best right now, though it's always wise to prepare for potential injuries.
Regardless of what happens this week, it's good to see the journeyman corner back on the field.
