Chiefs Bring Back 2 Fan Favorites After Roster Cutdown Day
By Jovan Alford
The Kansas City Chiefs finalized their initial 53-man roster ahead of Tuesday’s 4 pm ET deadline and are working on putting their 16-man practice squad together.
The Chiefs made one splashy signing to their practice squad, reportedly adding former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe. While fans were shocked to see the team go after Zappe, they were happy to see Kansas City bring back a couple of preseason fan favorites.
According to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, wide receiver Nikko Remigio joined the Chiefs’ practice squad. In addition to Remigio, the Chiefs are signing Justyn Ross to their taxi squad, per Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.
Remigio quickly became a fan favorite in Kansas City this summer after his performances in training camp and the preseason. Many fans thought he would make the 53-man roster if the Chiefs didn’t keep Kadarius Toney.
The Chiefs moved on from Toney on Tuesday, but it didn’t open up a spot for the 5-foot-9 wide receiver on the 53-man roster. Remigio posted seven receptions (11 targets) for 52 yards in the Chiefs’ three preseason games.
The former Fresno State wide receiver also saw action on special teams, taking snaps on kick and punt returns. With the NFL introducing their new kickoff model, Remigio could see some time this season depending on what happens with the active roster.
As for Ross, the former Clemson standout had three receptions (five targets) for 39 yards. The 24-year-old wide receiver got caught up in the numbers game after playing 10 games last year with the Chiefs. The 6-foot-4 wide receiver had six receptions (11 targets) for 53 yards, while also serving a six-game suspension.
Kansas City has a lot of proven veterans at the wide receiver spot, but they also have multiple young pass catchers, who can step in if called upon.
