Chiefs Get Bad Injury News on Star Player Before Super Bowl LVIII
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs got a big yet unfortunate injury update on star left guard Joe Thuney, who Andy Reid says is a "long-shot" to play in Super Bowl LVIII against the 49ers this Sunday.
Thuney, who missed the AFC Championship game after suffering a pectoral tear during the Divisional Round win over the Bills, was considered unlikely to play, but this news suffers a blow to the Chiefs' offense nonetheless.
Here's the latest update from Reid:
Chiefs Injury News: LG Joe Thuney "Long-Shot" to Play in Super Bowl
Thuney enjoyed perhaps his finest season as a pro this year, playing in 17 regular season games and earning First-Team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career.
By nearly any advanced metric, he's one of the very best offensive linemen in the NFL. Notably, he also only committed two penalties this year while Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith struggled mightily with penalties.
This news means fifth-year veteran Nick Allegretti should start the game. He performed well in the AFC Championship game, though it's still unfortunate to face a ferocious 49ers' defensive line without your best lineman.
We'll keep you updated on further injury updates throughout the week, but Thuney now likely joins Charles Omenihu as two important Chiefs players who won't play in the Super Bowl.
