Chiefs' All-Time History and Results on Thursday Night Football
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs open the 2024-25 season squaring off with the Ravens in an AFC Championship rematch on Thursday Night Football on September 5.
Kansas City is favored in the game and hopes to avoid losing two consecutive season-openers after winning the Super Bowl. It's an important matchup given the implications for tiebreakers in conference standings, and it'll be the second straight year the Chiefs start on Thursday Night Football.
While the Chiefs are 17-13 all-time on Thursdays, the concept of NFL's Thursday Night Football as we know it began in 2006. Let's look at Kansas City's all-time record in that stretch.
Chiefs' All-Time Record on Thursday Night Football
Year | Opponent | Results |
---|---|---|
2006 | vs. Denver Broncos | Chiefs Won 19-10 |
2012 | @ San Diego Chargers | Chargers Won 31-13 |
2013 | @ Philadelphia Eagles | Chiefs Won 26-16 |
2014 | @ Oakland Raiders | Raiders Won 24-20 |
2015 | vs. Denver Broncos | Broncos Won 31-24 |
2016 | vs. Oakland Raiders | Chiefs Won 21-13 |
2017 | vs. New England Patriots | Chiefs Won 42-27 |
2017 | @ Oakland Raiders | Raiders Won 31-30 |
2018 | vs. Los Angeles Chargers | Chargers Won 29-28 |
2019 | @ Denver Broncos | Chiefs Won 30-6 |
2020 | @ Buffalo Bills | Chiefs Won 26-17 |
2021 | @ Los Angeles Chargers | Chiefs Won 34-28 (OT) |
2022 | vs. Los Angeles Chargers | Chiefs Won 27-24 |
2023 | vs. Detroit Lions | Lions Won 21-20 |
2023 | vs. Denver Broncos | Chiefs Won 19-8 |
The Chiefs have a 9-6 record over 15 games in that stretch. They've won five of their last six, an encouraging trend as the team gets set to face the Ravens in Week 1.
They're slated to play Baltimore, then take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday later in the year with a similar presentation to Thursday Night Football. Kansas City will be at home for both of those contests, making it five straight at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Most of the games on that list didn't come in the first week of the season. Predictably, the Chiefs have been exceptional in Week 1 ever since Andy Reid came to town.
Chiefs' Record in Week 1 Under Andy Reid
The Chiefs are 9-2 in season-opening games with Andy Reid as head coach. They'd won eight straight prior to losing to the Lions last season, so you can bet Kansas City will want to start a new streak.
Baltimore has just one win in its last six games against the Chiefs. All signs point to another victory for Kansas City, and I can't wait to see Patrick Mahomes take on Lamar Jackson once again.
