Chiefs Add Another Rookie WR Ahead of Training Camp
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs continued addressing the wide receiver position by taking a shot on an undrafted rookie WR, signing Jaaron Hayek out of Villanova following a successful tryout at rookie minicamp.
Hayek had 170 catches for 2,744 receiving yards and 29 TDs in his career as a Wildcat, averaging over 57 yards per game throughout a five-year career. He showcases strong route-running and prowess on deep passes, clearly earning the respect of the coaching staff throughout camp.
For a Chiefs team potentially in need of wide receiver upgrades, Hayek represents an exciting dart throw.
Chiefs Sign Villanova WR Jaaron Hayek After Rookie Minicamp
At 6'1", 200 LBs, Hayek has adequate size and decent yet unspectacular athletic testing numbers. He wins with a shrewd understanding of the route tree and dependable hands, and earning a role during his freshman season at college speaks to his ability to catch on quickly.
It's a long shot at this point for Hayek to make the 53-man roster, though he could stick as a practice squad player the Chiefs try to develop long-term. Named to the 2022 All-CAA First-Team with 810 yards and eight TDs, his production is worth taking a swing on.
Hayek has strong leaping ability, helping him on deep passes and potentially filling a need for Kansas City. He's clearly done enough to earn a longer look and I'm excited to see what the Villanova standout can bring to the table.
He'll apparently wear #11 with the Chiefs, notably Marquez Valdes-Scantling's old number. As the organization says goodbye to one deep threat, it may be saying hello to another.
